SDSC New Referee Program

San Diego Soccer Club (SDSC) is proud to announce the new SDSC Youth Referee Development Program. As many of you may know from first-hand experience, our sport is in desperate need of new referees. Since the return from the pandemic, the referee force is operating at about 60% of its previous capacity. This is a nationwide issue and not something just specific to San Diego or California. This past weekend none of our PQ Recreational games had referees and on Saturday many of our 7v7 and 9v9 competitive games moved forward without referees. With this desperate need for new referees, SDSC is doing our part to try and help be a part of the solution. We strongly encourage all players 13 and older, to become US Soccer Certified Referees. We are also hoping that adults will choose to become referees as well because we need adult referees as much as we need youth referees.

New Referees can make approximately $30 an hour. Fees are paid in cash on the field or through a payment system. Referees are independent contractors and are able to create their own schedule. This is a great first job for young players and they gain some excellent life skills through the process.

Becoming a referee is a very simple process. You can take an online course at your own speed and when complete you then take a one day field training session. SDSC will be hosting a field training session on October 23rd from 9-12 at Carmel Mountain Ranch Recreation Center (update: this course is full but we’ve added another on October 24 (also filling fast!). You must complete the online training before registering for this field training session. Please follow the steps below to begin the process. If you have questions or need help please call Christine Van Slyke at 760-525-5363 or email at registrar@sandiegosoccerclub.org .
