Injury kept Leiden Huber from contributing in the San Diego Soccer Club’s run to the Cal South National Cup girls ’03 final this year. So she couldn’t wait to make an impact upon her return.

Huber scored a first-half goal to lift San Diego to a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Vision — coming off a win for the US National Cup title — in the team’s opening outing in the Surf Cup elite youth soccer tournament at the SoCal Sports Complex on Saturday.

“It was really nice to see it go in,” said Huber, a midfielder who was sidelined by a hip flexor for six weeks before returning to play last week. “We all played together super well, and to see one go in after all our hard work was just a cherry on top.”

The pool-play victory in the GU16 Super Black division represents the first step in San Diego defending the Surf Cup crown won in its respective age group last year.
