SDSC has been developing soccer players for over 20 years. Our coaching staff is our greatest asset with a depth of experience that is unparalleled within San Diego. San Diego Soccer Club coaches are dedicated to guiding players of all ability levels to reach their fullest potential, on and off the field.

We receive a lot of questions about the tryout process; please review the below details before heading into a SDSC tryout. We look forward to seeing you on the field!

Tryout Process:

  • For current (returning) SDSC players, the placement (tryout) process has been going on all year long. Placement of returning SDSC players is not defined by performance in the 2-3 days of tryouts.

  • Age group meetings are conducted prior to the tryout dates and include coaches within the age group from the current season AND the incoming season. EVERY current player is discussed among the full group of coaches and initial recommendation placement is noted.

  • Placement is determined based on what is the best path for the development of a player, as well as what contribution the player can provide to the team. There is a balance between what is the best environment for the player along with the goals of the team.

  • Tryout dates are an opportunity to see returning SDSC players on the field with players looking to join the club.

Before Tryouts:

  • Don’t forget to register! This is important so players aren’t held up upon check in.

  • Attend a kickaround session listed on our website for your age group to get a few more touches on the ball and become familiar with the incoming coaching staff.

  • Remember soccer development is a marathon, not a sprint.

Check-In Process/What to bring:

  • 15-30 minutes prior to a tryout session, players should go to the check-in table to get a number. Each player will use the same number throughout all days of tryouts. Fresh numbers are available on each day.

  • Players will be assigned to small groups based on ability and will move around through the course of tryouts to ensure the player is seen at the correct level for development.

  • Players must be prepared with their own water, equipment (cleats/shinguards) and anything else needed for a successful tryout.

During Tryouts, the coaches want to see players:

  • Show off good technique, game IQ, personality, athleticism, and speed.

  • Work hard!

After Tryouts:

  • Coaches may start selecting players after day one. All players will get a phone call regardless if they make a roster or not. Selection starts with navy team and works team to team, so full placement throughout an age group could take up to a week.

  • If a player has not received a phone call by December 19, please email info@sandiegosoccerclub.org.

  • We like a commitment within 24 hrs of receiving a phone call of offer. Spots that are not secured need to be released to another player ready to commit. By delaying a commitment, a player is preventing the continuation of the entire age group.

Accepting a roster spot:

  • Following a verbal commitment to a coach, a player will receive a confirmation registration email which will have a link for a non-refundable deposit.

  • Coaches will hold meetings with the incoming team within 1-2 weeks to discuss the season and say hello.

  • For our first round of tryouts (birth years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 201), there will be registration night on Friday, January 10 from 4-7pm at which players must submit necessary documents (original birth certificate, photocopies not allowed—is required for new players to SDSC only) to the Registrar. If a player is new to the club, the player will have the opportunity to try on uniforms in order to submit a uniform order. For our other age groups this date will be announced at a later time.

  • Returning players will NOT need to purchase any new gear unless needed for size or a jersey number change.

  • New players are required to purchase a full uniform kit. Information about our uniform can be found on our Team Gear page.

We look forward to another great year of soccer development at SDSC!
